Have you ever heard of someone losing faith in science because a scientist made an incorrect hypothesis or theory? I can say that I haven’t, and heaven knows there have been a lot of mistakes made in the name of science. It’s said that a part of scientific discovery is having the courage to make mistakes. As the inventor of the light bulb, Thomas Edison said, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
On the other hand, I have heard more than enough people say they left the faith due to the mistakes the Church has made. Let’s all face it, mankind is flawed, we are sinners and without the grace of God, there is no way for us to change our doomed nature. So naturally, the Catholic Church is made up of sinners who try their best to do the will of God. We must keep in mind that the Church does not claim all the people within it to be holy. Rather, the Church which Jesus took as His bride, guided by the Holy Spirit, is Holy. I heard a great quote from Catholic Answers the other days which sums this up nicely, “You should not leave Peter because of Judas.”
